Using Runometer

To put your runs on Runometer, you must first find your runs. Finding your runs can take some work and is different for each type of computer. We've written some instructions to help you and hope to provider helper tools in the future.

Uploading your Runs using Mac OS X

Step 1: iTunes Setup -- Enable Disk Use

You will only need to do this the first time you want to upload your run data.

  1. Connect your iPod™ to your Mac.
  2. In iTunes, select your iPod (if it's not already).
  3. In the Summary tab for your iPod™, scroll down to Options.
  4. Select "Enable Disk Use" and click the Apply button.
Enable Disk Use

Step 2: Finding your run files

We've written a helper to automatically locate your run files. If you'd rather do it your self, check out Find run files manually.

Download RunFinder RunFinder Icon (550 KB)

Using RunFinder

  1. Plug in your iPod™.
  2. Double-Click the RunFinder program.
  3. alias icon An alias, "Run Folder on Runner's Nano" will be placed on your desktop. The alias points to the run data on your iPod™.
  4. Your run data will be in the latest and synched folders inside "Run Folder on Runner's Nano".

    Run file names look like:

    2007-02-02 12;25;30.xml

Now that you have the alias, you shouldn't need RunFinder again. Feel free to move the Run Folder alias icon anywhere on your harddrive. If you lose the alias, you can use RunFinder again to make a new one.

Step 3: Managing your Run Files

Backing up your files

The synched folder contains runs that you have already sent to the Nike+ website. The latest folder contains new runs that you've not sent yet.

You can copy the contents of the latest and synched folders to whatever spot suits you for your own personal backups as well as uploading to Runometer. We recommend a making a "runs" folder in your home folder to backup your runs.

Don't move or delete these files if you're using the Nike+ site as well, only make copies.

Uploading your files

When uploading files to the Runometer.com site, you can use the "Run Folder" alias whenever you have your iPod™ plugged in.

Alternately: Find run files manually

Mac makes it reasonably easy to find the files on your system. You can find the files on your iPod™ using the Finder or using the Terminal.

Using the Finder

The Mac doesn't show you all the files on your iPod™; it's because there's a lot of stuff on there you don't really care about, but for this site, you do. You can set a sort of "see it all" mode if you launch Terminal.app (it's in "Utilities" folder under "Applications" in your Finder) and enter the following command:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true

You only need to use this command once; after that, the iPod_Control folder should appear every time, but for changes made like this to take effect, you'll need to re-launch your Finder: Apple+Option->click your Finder icon in the Dock and select "Relaunch"
Relaunch Finder

Once you've done this go to "icon" view mode, and start navigating! Click on the iPod™ icon on the desktop, and you'll find some new folders, including iPod_Control. Next, open the series of folders: Device, Trainer, Workouts, Empeds. Under this folder will be another folder whose name is a long string of letters and numbers (it's the unique ID of your Nike sensor), and under that, two final folders: latest and synched. Every file you've already sent to Nike is in synched, and all the new ones are still in latest. They're named after the date on which they were run. You can copy them from here to someplace easy to remember them, but I wouldn't recommend deleting or moving them! Go to this new location from the "Browse" button on the Add Runs page, and pick a file!

Using the Terminal

Your Run data can be found along this path when your ipod is plugged in:

/Volumes/<Your iPod name>/iPod_Control/Device/Trainer/Workouts/Empeds/<sensor id>/

(your iPod™ name and sensor id will vary).

In this directory is all your workout data; specifically two folders: latest and synched. latest contains your new runs; once you've sent them to Nike, they're shifted over to synched. Each file is named for the date and time it was run, followed by a .xml extension.

Uploading your Runs using Windows:

When you first browse your iPod in windows, you'll see a directory like this:

iPod

You need to change your file manager settings to make the iPodControl directory on your iPod™ visible. in order to do this, you need to change the way windows displays directories; this is located under "Tools"->"Folder Options" on your Explorer window in Windows XP. Options.

folder view options This will bring up the "Folder Options" Window. Select the "View" tab, so that you see something like this: . Simply switch the radio button for "Do not show hidden files and folders" to "Show hidden files and folders."

show all

Clicking "Apply to All Folders" after completing this step will enable viewing of the entire contents of your iPod, including from the "Browse" dialog of your web browser.

Now, your view of your iPod's top directory should look something like this: Click through folders until you reach iPod_Control\Device\Trainer\Workouts\Empeds\ - in this folder, there will be another folder whose name is a long list of letters and numbers, like 4H623V5KVZS. You can save yourself time with future uploads by simply creating a shortcut to this folder in your home directory, or on your desktop.
voila.
Under the folder with the long name, you'll find two final folders: latest and synched.

Uploading your Runs using Linux:

Since Linux doesn't respect the Apple "hidden" meta-information, you can literally just navigate to the correct path on your iPod (once it's mounted) from within the Browse dialog on the Add Run Page. You'll find the dated xml files in:

    <mount point>/iPod_Control/Device/Trainer/Workouts/Empeds/<sensor id>/latest/
(runs that haven't been uploaded via iTunes)

and

    <mount point>/iPod_Control/Device/Trainer/Workouts/Empeds/<sensor id>/synched/
(runs that have already been uploaded via iTunes)

For information on mounting the iPod under Linux, see this O'Reilly Hack, or consult documentation for your Linux distribution.

Adding your Routes to Runometer:

Adding a route to Runometer can be done in one of two ways: sketching out your route on top of a map in the Add Route Page, or uploading a .gpx file you create with the gmaps-pedometer, Google Earth (requires a translation step from KML to GPX), or the GIS software of your choice.
